Before You Hit That StarterâŠ
Youâve just finished assembling your Cison V8.
Everything looks right.
Youâre ready to start it.
This is the most exciting momentâŠ
And also the moment where small mistakes show up fast
The truth is:
Most âwonât startâ or âruns badlyâ issues
come from things that could have been caught before the first start
This checklist is based on real build experience
Follow it once, and youâll save yourself hours of troubleshooting
Quick Pre-Start Checklist (Save This)
| Category | Check Item | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling | Coolant filled (50/50 mix) | â |
| Cooling | No leaks, pump spins freely | â |
| Oil | Oil level correct | â |
| Oil | Crankshaft rotates smoothly | â |
| Ignition | Spark plugs installed correctly | â |
| Ignition | Battery fully charged | â |
| Fuel | Fuel lines secure, no leaks | â |
| Fuel | Carburetor at baseline setting | â |
| Safety | Engine mounted securely | â |
| Safety | No loose objects nearby | â |
If every box is checked:
Youâre ready for first start
1. Cooling System
Recommended:
50/50 mix of distilled water + coolant
Why this matters:
-
Lubricates water pump
-
Prevents corrosion
-
Keeps temperatures stable
Before starting:
-
Cooling system fully filled
-
No visible leaks
-
Water pump spins freely
Avoid tap water â mineral buildup over time
2. Engine Oil & Lubrication
Recommended:
10W-30 or 10W-40 engine oil
(non-energy-conserving type preferred)
Check:
-
Oil level is correct
-
Oil lines are secure
-
Crankshaft turns smoothly by hand
Pro tip:
Add a little oil to key moving parts before first start
3. Ignition System
This is where many first-start failures happen.
Check:
-
Spark plugs installed (not overtightened)
-
Ignition wires fully seated
-
Correct firing order
-
Battery fully charged
Low voltage = weak spark
Very common startup issue
4. Fuel System
Recommended:
-
High octane fuel (95/98 RON)
-
Ethanol-free if possible
Check:
-
Fuel lines secure
-
No leaks
-
No kinks
-
Carburetor at baseline setting
Do NOT aggressively tune mixture on first start
5. Mounting & Safety
Before starting:
-
Engine firmly mounted
-
No tools or loose objects nearby
-
Hands and cables clear of moving parts
Eye protection strongly recommended
6. First Startup Procedure
When starting:
-
Start at low throttle
-
Let engine idle for 1â2 minutes
Watch for:
-
Coolant flow
-
Oil/fuel leaks
-
Unusual noises
Do NOT rev immediately
Do NOT hold high idle early
7. Break-In Period
First 1â2 hours:
-
Low to medium RPM
-
No sudden throttle changes
-
Allow cooling pauses
After first run, re-check:
-
Bolts
-
Belt tension
-
Oil level
-
Coolant level
Final Thoughts
This is not just a checklist.
Itâs the difference between:
-
A smooth first start
-
And hours of frustration
Most problems people face:
Are not âengine defectsâ
They are missed details
Take your time.
Do it right once.
And when that engine starts⊠![]()
Itâs not just a machine running
Itâs your build coming to life
