OKMO 1140 tips
I thought to write a short guide on this engine after running it for nearly 6 hours till now.
As I mentioned in my previous post, this is currently my favorite engine and certainly it has grabbed a lot of attention.
Here are some note worthy points :
Oil
I strongly recommend to use a high quality synthetic 2 stroke oil ( Motul 710 ) for this engine . The reason is simple, the oil has outstanding protection characteristics and since it is not fully buring in combustion chamber, the return oil is perfectly fine to be filtered through the oil filter and continues the protection of necessary parts .
The small amount that gets into the combustion chamber will not only burn clean but also provides lubrication for valves . This is important because with standard engine oil you will have carbon soot when it burns and I don’t recommend it.
It is important to keep an eye on the oil level for the first 3-4 fuel tank to ensure it doesn’t go below minimum which is under the oil pump pipe. Ideally you want to have it fully submerged in the oil and when moving the flywheel and big end of the pistoon comes down, it gently touches the oil ( not to get submerged).
I use straight campfuel as the fuel as it burns clean and the lower octane than gasoline provides easier combustion.
Spark Plug
A great advantage of not needing to mix oil with the fuel is the time between cleaning the spark plug is longer . I strongly recommend to take out the spark plugs and clean them every 2 full tank. These little plugs will foul eventually and cause incomplete combustion and build up of deposit inside the chamber .
Pay close attention to fully tighten the plugs ( without damaging the o ring ) to ensure proper compression in place .
Break in period
When I received my engine , I ensured to pay close attention to the break in period, especially as this engine uses proper pistion ring and oil feeder/scraper ring.
You want to ensure to keep the RPMs as low as possible for the first full tank. I suggest to run it a bit rich which helps with the cooling the engine but also the correct bedding in of the rings. If you let it to rev high,you will end up with loose rings and might experience excessive oil burn or accumulation inside th combustion chamber .
I strongly suggest to go through correct metal heat cycling by running the engine 2 mins each time for 3 times on the first run. And letting it to fully cool down after each run time.
Ignition timing
As I like this engine to run a bit slower and to protect it from high rev , I retarded the ignition timing but gently brining the hall sensor cable outwards by 2mm. This brings the timing closer to the TDC which in return gives a good balance of lower RPM and full combustion with minimal kick during rich and low range.
This is not needed but was my preference.
Operation Temperture and coolant
This engine takes a while to fully warm up, therefore avoid giving it high revs when it’s cold or room temperture warm , otherwise as the parts have expanded correctly, you will have excessive oil build up inside the chamber and out of the exhaust . I usually get a small puff of smoke ( I actually like it ) when the engine been sitting for a while before the cold start, and ir clears to no smoke after 10 seconds. Advantage of using the Motul 710 is you won’t have any soot build up despite the smoke or spit of some oil during the operation. That’s actually the mixture of water from full combustion and correct lubrication.
I recommend not to use coolant or water during the first 3 minutes of the operation. This will allow the seals and rings to bed in correctly with the heat, prior to the coolant or water gets there
Oil filter clean up
I strongly recommend to take out the oil filter ( as shown in my previous post ) after the first full tank and every 3 tanks followed. To clean just use a kitchen touch and a bit of alcohol to fully clean then dry the filter. Add some oil to the filter once placed inside the cap. Tights and check for any leaks .
